January 2000 | - |
We sell 100 shares of Hewlett Packard stock for $11,000 in anticipation of
buying an electric or hybrid car.
This move is key to my sanity. The "dot com bubble" is about to burst and the value of HP stock will fall over the next two years. The longer I wait for the car to be delivered the cheaper it gets. |
- |
March 2000 | - | Test drive a Sparrow at Certex in Littleton, CO. | - |
May 2000 | - | Ordered Sparrow from Certex in Littleton, CO. Paid deposit. I have reservation #220. | $1,000 |
October 2000 | 0 | Sparrow (VIN #182) is shipped to Childress Motors in Phoenix. It is used as a floor model. | - |
March 2001 | - | Certex allows its franchise to lapse. Corbin Motors claims my car is going into the paint shop and it will be shipped in 6 weeks. Corbin wants full payment at this time. My order was transferred to Childress Motors. I paid the remainder of the wholesale price. The 100 shares of HP stock would only be worth $6,000. | $10,200 |
April 2001 | - | I call ~20 insurance companies looking for insurance. I eventually get insurance through Allstate from an agent in Denver. We have to switch the coverage on all of our cars to them. | - |
August 2001 | - | A Sparrow with VIN #220 is shipped to a dealer in California. When I complain, I am told reservation #220 corresponds to VIN #249. | - |
October 2001 | - | Sparrow (VIN #182) is recalled to the factory. The batteries are replaced and the charger is upgraded to have the "V9" chip. All the batteries are marked "Blemish" or "Recond". | - |
January 2002 | - | After many queries about my car, Childress offers to send me their floor model. The 100 shares HP stock would only be worth $3,600. | - |
Jan 18, 2002 | 384 |
My Sparrow (VIN #182) is delivered at 6am. It is delivered by an 81 year old man
who drove straight through from Phoenix for 18 hours.
He drives the Sparrow off the trailer and scrapes the chrome wheels on the trailer's
side rails, then runs into the curb, cracking the front "bumper". I pay the difference
between retail and wholesale plus a delivery fee.
I try to get him to take a nap before heading home. He declines explaining that he wants to get home in time for supper. When he realizes this is not possible he promises to check into a hotel near Denver. He drives all the way home without stopping to sleep. The dome light doesn't work, the wires are melted. The door doesn't ever look properly closed. Unfortunately it is a lot of fun to drive. :) |
$3,300 |
February 2002 | - | Corbin announces they are "temporarily" suspending production of the Sparrow so they can retool to produce an AC version. At this point 285 Sparrows have been delivered. | - |
February 2002 | - | The drive belt starts squeaking -- loudly. Powered graphite does no good. In the sparrow_ev yahoo group I read about a greaseless lubricating gel from Radio Shack. The squeak stops. | $4.95 |
June 2002 | 1800 | The drive belt breaks. I get towed home on a flat bed tow truck. | $50 |
July 2002 | 1800 |
I buy two replacement belts and install one.
Davide's writeup on changing a belt in the
sparrow_ev yahoo group
saves me. It might have taken weeks of my sitting in the garage before I would
have figured out to put a cinder block under the motor.
The bolts that hold the swingarm to a bracket on the motor are stripped. One of the bolts had been ground down to remove the stripped threads and forced back into the hole. The holes in the bracket are also crossthreaded. I retap and buy new bolts. |
$180 |
July 14, 2002 | 1810 | The sparrow_ev group saves me again. After reading a post on loose battery connections I check my connections and find a connector whose nut was about to fall off. | - |
October 2002 | 2900 | I don't drive for a week due to snow. It gets quite cold. Driving home the voltage gets unacceptably low. (13.3 miles round trip) | - |
January 2003 | 3300 | I start plugging in at work on colder days. I plug in if it takes more than 7 amp-hrs to get to work. I start out plugging in only once a week but by April I have to plug in every day. | - |
Mar 31, 2003 | 3600 | Corbin Motors files chapter 7 bankruptcy. Used Sparrows sell for $6,000 to $7,000 on eBay. | - |
April 2003 | 3600 | We file our 2002 Colorado State income tax claiming a $3650 deduction for the purchase of an alternate fueled vehicle. | - |
April 2003 | 3700 | I am told I can't plug my car in at work anymore. I stop driving it to work. | - |
Easter 2003 | 3700 | Through much testing I find that after drawing 20 amp-hrs off the batteries one battery drops to 8 volts under load and another drops to 2 volts under load. | - |
May 3, 2003 | 3700 |
I replace the two weak batteries. Over the next week my mileage goes back
to 1 m/Ah from .5 m/Ah. I can get to work and back without my voltage
sagging much below 150V.
The batteries were purchased for $130 each from Batteriesareus.com -- free shipping. |
$260 |
May 4, 2003 | 3700 | I am told I can plug in my car at work again. The new outlet is over a quarter mile from my building. | - |
Jun 19, 2003 | 4200 | It is getting hard to get to work and back again. Voltage is dropping to 120V on the way home. | - |
Jul 2003 | 4500 | Receive 2002 Colorado State income tax refund with a $3650 deduction for the purchase of an alternate fueled vehicle. I am annoyed that a 100% gasoline powered hybrid also qualifies for the "alternate fueled" tax credit. | -$3,650 |
Aug 19, 2003 | 4700 | Order 5 new batteries for $135 each from Batteriesareus.com. They take over a month to arrive. Some of the batteries are dual post and will not physically fit in all positions in the pack. | $675 |
Sep 25, 2003 | 5000 | Was unable to make it home at traffic speeds. Took side roads and stopped on the side of the road for 10 minutes to let batteries recover. | - |
Sep 27, 2003 | 5000 | Install 2 new batteries | - |
Oct 12, 2003 | 5200 | Install 1 new battery | - |
Jan 2004 | - | The batteries hold their temperature at about 70 degrees as long as I charge every day. I use the outdoor outlet at work only three times all winter. None of the area near the outlet is plowed so it is a little dicey getting in and out. | - |
May 2004 | 6500 |
Myers Motors appears to have bought all of the Corbin parts inventory and
are offering ~70 Sparrows for sale. They are in Ohio.
www.myersmotors.com
A used Sparrow sells on eBay for $13,000. |
- |
Aug 15, 2004 | 7050 | The flasher relay stops working. I buy a "LOUD!" relay to replace it. The old one was too quiet to hear and the "quick" steering often kept the turn signal from cancelling. I have driven for miles with my blinker still on from my most recent turn. With the louder relay I can tell when my blinker is on. | $9 |
Sept 4, 2004 | 7200 |
Replaced one battery. The pack voltage was dropping to 120 to 130 volts on the
way home from work. After identifying and replacing the one battery which
was dropping to 3.9 volts under load, the pack is able to maintain 150 volts
over the trip to work and back.
The new battery is one that has been sitting in my garage for a year. |
- |
Sept 16, 2004 | 7350 |
The mirror fell out of the "passenger side" mirror housing and shattered in the street.
The mirror was only held in with two small pieces of dried out double sticky tape. The tape is located on the left and right ends and any pressure on the top or bottom of the mirror will easily pop it out. I was adjusting the mirror and noticed that the top of the mirror was set into the housing too far and when I pressed on the bottom the whole mirror fell out. |
- |
Sept 18, 2004 | 7380 | Moved a wire in the "gas cap" so the Sparrow will no longer trip GFIs when it is plugged into one. I moved the small green wire of the power sensing circuit from the large green chassis ground to the large white ground wire. | - |
Sept 18, 2004 | 7380 | I replaced the mirror with a plastic one that is easy to cut to shape. Hopefully, this will do until a glass replacement mirror can be found. | $5.95 |
Oct 9, 2004 | 7550 | The plastic mirror was worthless as it was too thin to hold its shape. I cut a glass mirror myself. | $2.20 |
Oct 28, 2004 | 7700 | My drive belt breaks two blocks from home. I decide to push it home rather than wait an hour for a tow truck. I will not do that again without stopping to rest. | - |
Oct 30, 2004 | 7700 |
I replace my drive belt. I used the spare belt I bought two years ago.
For the first few days the new belt sounds funny and my mileage drops by about 10%. |
- |
Nov 7, 2004 | 7770 |
I replaced my weakest battery. With 16Ah drawn off the pack this battery would drop to
1.9V with a 75Amp load. The whole pack would drop to 120V.
This is the first time I have replaced a battery that I installed. This battery was installed 14 months and 2770 miles ago. |
- |
Mar 9, 2005 | 8500 |
I used a sound level meter to see how loud it is inside the Sparrow. It is:
|
- |
Mar 10, 2005 | 8500 | Putting a beanbag chair in the "trunk" lowers each of the Sparrow sound level readings by 3db. | - |
Mar 25, 2005 | 8600 | Putting a layer of cardboard between me and the "trunk" lowers each of the Sparrow sound level readings by 3db or 4db. | - |
Mar 29, 2005 | 8700 | It appears that the batteries do not fully recharge. While the voltage is good, each day I draw out two more amp-hours than are put in. In the past, charging has put an amp-hour or two more into the pack than is drawn out. I suspect that either the e-meter or the 12V converter needs replaced. | - |
Apr 3, 2005 | 8700 | Bought my second tube of Radio Shack Lube Gel for the drive belt. | $3.18 |
Jul 11, 2005 | 9480 |
A battery died all at once. I was only able to go a few blocks with a top
speed of 20mph after getting off the main road. Letting the batteries rest
would only get me another block. I had to be towed home. We used a tow
rope to get home and never went faster than 10mph. It seemed to work just
fine even though the Sparrow manual seems to say not to do this.
This was a new experience for me as every other battery had died gradually enough that I was able to make it home -- just slowly. It appears that the internal resistance of a single cell had jumped up to just over an ohm while I was driving. Once this much resistence was in the cell it was no longer possible to draw even 50 amps. It was very easy to spot the bad battery; the bad cell was hot to the touch. All other batteries were about 80 degrees F, while the bad cell was ~120 degrees. A meter on this single battery goes from 12.5V with no load to -37V as I draw 30 or 40 amps backing out of the garage. |
- |
Jul 16, 2005 | 9482 |
Bought and installed another battery. The Sparrow runs again.
This battery had side connections and was purchased from the local BatteriesPlus store. |
$155.50 |
Jul 16, 2005 | 9482 |
I had hoped that replacing the battery would fix the e-meter. It was resetting at random.
Then, it was giving readings as if it the batteries were never recharging all the way. Now
it is doing both.
I also notice that the blinker causes the headlamp to dim. |
- |
Jul 23, 2005 | 9482 | Ordered three more batteries to keep as spares. These were ordered through the local BatteriesPlus for $154.99 each. These are not dual post batteries. | $496.12 |
Jul 24, 2005 | 9488 | Ordered a belt to keep as a spare. I ordered it from igate.bearing.com. | $71.39 |
Aug 15, 2005 | 9738 | Replaced two more batteries. My voltage was dropping to 120 on the way home, despite this my acceleration was pretty good. As I was testing my batteries I found 4 weak ones. One was dropping to 4V, and three were dropping to 6V. I replaced the 4V and the other 6V that wwas under the seat. I'll replace the two weak ones under the hood if the voltage still sags below 130V. | - |
Oct 9, 2005 | 10150 |
Replaced another battery. This was one of the newest in the pack. It had been put in
on 11/7/04. That battery had also replaced a new one. This is now the third battery
in position 7 of the string.
The two weak batteries I identified on 8/15 were not the weakest. Another battery developed high (0.2 ohm) internal resistance and would drop to -3.5V at 75 amps. I was able to get to work and back with it in this state, but it was slow going the last mile. It seems like a good idea to have something like a high current diode in parallel with each battery. This would pass current around the battery whenever its voltage dropped below 0. The battery could help power the car at low current, and the diode would keep it from slowing down the car at high current. Carrying one of these diodes with me, with clamps on the ends, might have allowed me to drive home on 7/11. |
- |
Oct 30, 2005 | 10300 | I installed a simple battery monitor. It has an LED for each battery. If a battery's voltage is above 10 volts the LED is on, otherwise it is off. | ~$50 |
Nov 20, 2005 | 10541 |
Pack voltage has been sagging to 120V on the way home form work.
Ordered two new batteries for $139 each from Batteriesareus.com. Only one battery showed up after two weeks. It had been returned from some place in Michigan. Replaced the one of the original 13 batteries. I would have replaced two if they had arrived. |
$284 |
Dec 06, 2005 | 10800 |
Very cold (2 F) and a little snowy (1 to 2 inches). I have my first "wreck." The sparrow spins sideways and pops up the curb on the far side of the road. I was going between 10 and 15 mph at the time. I park and drive home the next day after the streets are cleared. Getting home was very slow going and I had to stop once and let the batteries recover.
There was no noticeable damage to the Sparrow. I don't drive it again until the 11th. |
- |
Dec 12, 2005 | 10800 | I plug in my 13 idiot light voltage indicator crooked. Sparks fly and 7 fuses burn out. | $2 |
Dec 13, 2005 | 10800 | As I drive to and from work on the 13th,14th, and 15th the power would cut out like it does when the voltage sags to 120V. This seems to be connected with hitting bumps in the road. I stop driving until I have some time off at Christmas. This problem fixes itself by Christmas. The daily highs warmed up from the 20's on the 13th to the 60's on Christmas. | - |
Dec 28, 2005 | 10800 |
Got a new battery from Interstate Batteries. I replace the other of my original batteries that I wanted to replace in November.
They gave me a much better price than what was quoted to me over the phone years earlier. |
$147 |
Jan 03, 2006 | 10840 | One of the original batteries fails with high internal resistance. I was able to drive home a few hours later, but the bad battery got warm. The day before I got notice that a battery I ordered on 11/20/06 is to be shipped. | - |
Jan 12, 2006 | 10840 | The battery from my order on 11/20/06 arrives and I install it. | - |
Jan 19, 2006 | 10900 | Buy a new battery from Interstate Batteries. 137+tax This is kept as a spare. | $147 |
Mar 19, 2006 | 11231 | Replace 2 batteries. Use spare and buy one from AutoZone for $159. | $170 |
Mar 27, 2006 | 11257 | Buy a new spare battery from Interstate Batteries. $134+tax | $142 |
Mar 29, 2006 | 11280 |
Disconnected the fan inside the front "bumper." This fan has a bad bearing and has often been rather noisy for the past few months. The e-meter started working as expected when the fan was disconnected; it had been giving bad readings for about a year.
Loosened the bolts holding the door on, and lifted on the door and re-tightened the bolts. This made the door close much more easily. |
- |
Apr 16, 2006 | 11449 | Drive belt broke. Got towed home. | $60 |
Apr 23, 2006 | 11449 | Replaced drive belt. Stripped out the Allen key on two bolts and replaced them for 55 cents a piece. | $1 |
Apr 28, 2006 | 11500 | Ordered a set of motor brushes. I don't know when I will get around to doing the replacement. | $62.57 |
Jul 29, 2006 | 12280 | Ordered an new drive belt to have a spare | $78 |
Aug 12, 2006 | 12341 |
Replaced the battery installed on 11/20/05. This battery came from batteriesareus.com but had been sent to a customer in Ohio and then returned. The replacement battery is the one I bought in March.
On the 10th and 11th I saw the pack voltage dip below 130V on the way home from work. My 13 idiot lights are hard to read in the daylight, so I waited until after dark to diagnose which battery was weak. |
- |
Aug 25, 2006 | 12462 |
Buy four new spare batteries from Interstate Batteries. $140 each +tax.
Installed 2 the next day. |
$597 |
Sep 09, 2006 | 12555 | Replaced two batteries. | - |
Oct 13, 2006 | 12770 | Bought two batteries from Interstate Batteries. $157 each +tax. | $337 |
Oct 24, 2006 | 12840 | Replaced one battery. | - |
Nov 16, 2006 | 13010 | The weld holding the large drive sprocket onto the rear axel broke. This allows the motor and the rear sprocket to rev to high speeds while the rear wheel remains motionless. The sprocket might have come off the axel but the belt guard held it in position. My long-suffering wife had to come tow me home. | - |
Nov 19, 2006 | 13010 | Reattached the drive sprocket with a bolt. Link to repair detail. | $10 |
Dec 20, 2006 | 13156 | 22 inches of snow fall on the 20th and 21st. Other storms add to the snow. While the roads get cleared our alley doesn't. This begins the longest I have gone without driving my Sparrow since I got it. | - |
Feb 19, 2007 | 13156 | The ice in the alley melts enough that I get my Sparrow out. I am able to drive two blocks before the pack voltage drops to 120 volts. Recharging only takes a few minutes. Driving the next day I am able to go about a mile and then recharge. The next trip is two miles, but the recharge takes 13 Amp-hrs. The next trip, I can go 13 miles again. I guess the batteries needed to warm up before they could take a charge. | - |
Mar 7, 2007 | 13255 | Remembering that my last belt broke about a year ago, I decide to replace my belt annually. Belts last about a year and a half and cost about $80. Throwing away a belt with about a third of its good left in it is cheaper than the cost of towing my Sparrow home from where ever it breaks down. I plan to change my belt every April. | - |
Mar 8, 2007 | 13265 | Drive belt breaks. My long suffering wife tows me 3 miles home and we decide that is too far. | - |
Mar 11, 2007 | 13265 | Install belt that was purchased last July. Order a new belt from limct.com to have as a spare. | $82.11 |
Jun 22, 2007 | 13986 |
I am unable to make it home from work. My #9 battery develops an
internal resistance that keeps me from going faster than 5mph. This seems
to follow the usual internal resistance failure pattern. I am driving along
easily able to go 40MPH and then the next time I touch the accelerator the
voltage falls below 120 Volts and I lose all power.
Letting it cool down for a couple of hours and driving slowly does not help. It becomes clear that I will not be able to cross a couple of busy streets so my long suffering wife tows me home the last mile and a half. |
- |
Jun 23, 2007 | 13986 |
It is not possible to test battery #9 with a multimeter because its positive post is
hidden under battery #4. I made a circuit to test my batteries while I drive, so I know that
#9 is my bad one.
I bought a cheap electronic infrared thermometer for $10 a few months ago. You don't have to touch something to take its temperature. You just point, press a button, and you see the temperature instantly. I got it as a way to get a second opinion about which battery is bad when I have an internal resistance problem. My theory is that the battery with the highest internal resistance will be the hottest. With this meter I found that the temperature of batteries #4 through #7 were 91°F, #8 was 93°F and #9 was 97°F. These readings were made 12 hours I had last driven my Sparrow. I replace the #9 battery. I had bought the replacement 8 months earlier. Batteries #8 and #9 are the hardest ones in the pack to replace. In an attempt to delay needing to replace the batteries in these positions I swap a newer battery into the #8 position. It does not seem possible to put an Optima with sidepost connections in the #8 position so I had to pick a battery without sideposts to put in that spot. I accidently break a weld in the bracket where the charger mounts. Reattaching with screws seems to work.

Jul 2, 2007 | 14074 | Purchased two batteries as spares from Interstate batteries. $158+tax each. | $337 |
Jul 3, 2007 | 14078 |
Built a wall between the "trunk" and the "cab" of my Sparrow. The wall is made of trapezoids of
particle board. The trapezoids are screwed to the fiberglass inside the trunk and both sides of
the particle board are covered with carpet.
The main goal of this was to reduce the noise inside the cab. I have had a piece of cardboard between me and the cardboard since March of 2005. This wall is more attractive looking and seems to quiet things down a bit. Measurements today with the wall are louder than measurements taken two years earlier with no barrier at all. |
- |
Aug 14, 2007 | 14400 |
The "driver's side" mirror fell out. I saw it wiggling and was able to pull it
into the cab before it fell out and broke like the other one did a few years ago.
I was able to tape it back in with foam tape like held it in originally. |
- |
Aug 18, 2007 | 14440 | When replacing my Passat wiper blades I noticed how springy they were, curling up as I lifted them off the flat glass of the windshield. Thinking the same kind of wiper might fit the curve of the Sparrow's windshield, I bought a Bosch ICON wiper blade and installed it. While it works better than my old wiper blades ever did, it still does not work perfectly. I may tune it a bit more by bending it. | $18 |
Aug 21, 2007 | 14465 | Voltage has been sagging to 130V on the way home. I buy two more batteries so I can replace three and have one as a spare. $158+tax each. | $337.07 |
Aug 25, 2007 | 14516 | Replace three batteries under the hood. I also remove the hood hinges so replacing batteries in the future will be easier. I cut the hold down bracket for the #4 battery at the weld and put in a hinge. Without the hinge I have to bend the bracket to replace batteries #4, #8, and #9. | - |
Sep 9, 2007 | 14639 | Replace a battery that is under the seat. This battery had been installed exactly a year before. | - |
Sep 14, 2007 | 14699 | Buy four new batteries. Three more are weak, and it is good to have one as a spare. | $674.13 |
Sep 15, 2007 | 14712 | Replace a Battery under the seat. | - |
Sep 19, 2007 | 14747 | Replace a Battery under the seat. | - |
Sep 28, 2007 | - | Buy new battery from Interstate Battery | 104.95 |
Oct 23, 2007 | 15020 | Order front disk rotors from Myers Motors which arrive in 3 days. | $149 |
Oct 27, 2007 | 15090 |
Have disk rotors installed by local garage. Braking is much smoother now. They found that the ball joints were loose and tightened those too.
There is still much more noise than there used to be. Brushes? Bearings? |
$135 |
Nov 24, 2007 | 15255 | Replaced two more batteries. | - |
Dec 17, 2007 | 15390 | Snow fills the alley for two months. | - |
Feb 18, 2008 | 15390 | Bought two more batteries at Interstate Battery. | $337 |
Feb 18, 2008 | 15390 | The Sparrow has been much noisier for a few months. I decide to check the motor brushes. As near as I can tell the brushes, that are 1.3 inches long new, have warn down less than a tenth of an inch. While the brushes seem OK the Sparrow seems too noisy to drive. | - |
May 26, 2008 | 15392 |
I took apart my Sparrow in March, and finally removed the motor in early May and took it in to be
checked for bad bearings and anything else that might be causing noise. After replacing the bearings and smoothing out the commutators, my Sparrow is quieter than it has ever been. They replaced the brushes, as long as I had new ones sitting around.
The speedometer no longer works. |
$617 |
Jun 7, 2008 | 15392 | Replaced the battery that was installed September 19th, 2007. It only lasted 645 miles. | - |
Jun 22, 2008 | 15392 |
Repaired the speedometer. One of the wires that go to the motor's speed sensing unit was not crimped properly and it pulled loose when I took out the motor. I recrimped and it seems OK.
I drove my Sparrow about 60 miles with the speedometer, and odometer, not working. This means my odometer is now off by about 60 miles. |
- |
Aug 3, 2008 | 15730 |
The pulley on the rear axel comes a bit loose. When going over bumps the pulley rubs against the inside of the wheel skirt and makes lots of noise.
I remove the pulley and find that the pin I made from the shank of a drill bit on Nov 19, 2006 is broken in three parts. I make a new pin out of music wire and reassemble. |
$4.79 |
Aug 24, 2008 | 15940 | Replaced front brake pads with ones that are not supposed to squeak. The squeak is not as loud, but happens more often. | $68.21 |
Aug 29, 2008 | 15990 | The pin I put in on Aug 3rd breaks. I drill out the axle to allow a 3/8th inch pin and take the pulley to a machine shop to have the slot in the back enlarged so a longer and wider pin can be used in place of the 1/4th inch pin. This doesn't break, at least right away. Photo of new pin | $40 |
Mar 19, 2009 | 17133 | Replace rear tire. It was just to the wear bars on the left and in the center, but the right side was nearly bald. The front tires still look good. | $49.58 |
Jul 29, 2009 | 18058 | Replace a battery. It has been just over a year since I last replaced a battery. The replacement battery has been sitting my garage for the past 17 months. This battery it replaced had been in service for over 4 years. This battery failed dramatically. My first clue was that I smelled sulfur, and then noticed that the accelerator didn't do anything. The voltage had dropped to 120V all of a sudden. This is the third time now that I was not going to be able to limp home on a weak battery. Only one in 11 battery failures are so sudden that I don't change them out before they keep me from being able to get home. Last year I soldered a large 400 Amp diode between a pair of battery clips and stowed it in my trunk. When my battery failed I clamped this diode across the bad battery and was able to drive home. | - |
Oct 9, 2009 | 18058 | Bought two replacement batteries. | $450.17 |
Nov, 2009 | - | Front disk rotors are warped again. Had front disks ground. | - |
Mar 12, 2010 | 19260 | Drive belt breaks. Get towed home. | $67 |
Mar 14, 2010 | 19260 | Harbor Freight has a 100 Amp load battery tester. This works great. I can see a battery dip below 10V while driving using my 13 idiot lights, and then test the battery when I get home to see how far below 10V it is dropping. | $29 |
Apr 4, 2010 | 19380 | Buy new drive belt from limct.com. $83 + $10 shipping | $93.16 |
Oct 24, 2010 | 20900 | Cut a masonite floor for the trunk and cover it with carpet. This is mostly to have a level floor to the trunk. It might also help reduce the noise in the cab. | - |

Replace battery. This battery was bought in October 2009.
My 100 Amp load tester showed 8V for the battery I replaced. Since it is only 8V it was probably only tested at 67 amps. It has been 15 months since I replace any batteries. |

Dec 5, 2010 | 21227 | Order a new battery from Amazon. | $184.23 |
Dec 12, 2010 | 21301 | Install the new battery. I was planning to replace this battery as soon as the battery came in from Amazon. I waited a couple extra days and it failed so completely that I needed to shunt across it with my clamp-on-diode in order to limp home from a 2 mile trip. /p The battery made bad smells both when it failed and when I recharged the pack before changing out the battery. | - |
Dec 15, 2010 | 21301 | Was driving past Aurora, Nebraska and bought two new batteries. | $334 |
Jan 24, 2011 | 21391 | Installed a new battery. I think this battery had an internal short. It was fine as long as I drove the car every day. When snow and the holidays kept me from driving every day it would be weak until I had recharged the pack a couple of times. | - |
Feb 19, 2011 | 21478 | Installed a new battery. After I was done, the Sparrow didn't work. Turning the key did not cause any relays to click, and the 12 volt components work, but the car will not move. | - |

After 2 months of looking for easy fixes, like burned out ground wires and loose connections, I
replaced the ZTX549 transistor on EVCL board and then the ignition relay would click when key was turned. Reverse works, but not forward.
The transistor was only 23 cents, but there was $8 shipping so I bought 2 of every transister on the board. |
$10 |
May 3, 2011 | 21478 | Found a loose connection on the EVBC box. I had knocked this wire loose while looking for the bad transister. The car now runs in forward and reverse! | - |
Jun 26, 2011 | 21783 | The battery charger quit working earlier in the week. I found that a wire in the AC power connector under the hood had melted. I replaced the connector, and it is working again. | $5 |
Sept 10, 2011 | 22311 |
Replaced a battery. This one had quit 3 weeks earlier. The bypass diode was needed to get home from work.
The battery came from Amazon. The local batteries were $220 to $250. |

A battery died when I was on my way home. I tried to use my diode to get me home but something scratched through the insulation and there was a big spark. 90 volts were shorted to ground for a fraction of a second.
The Sparrow would not move after that, and I had to be towed home. |
$60 |
Jan. 22, 2012 | 22562 |
Replaced a bad transistor. The same one I replaced in April.
The forward reverse relays click now, but the car won't move. |
$0 |
Jan. 28, 2012 | 22562 | Replaced the battery that died in October. I also replaced a bolt that was melted when it scratched my diode's insulation. | $0.45 |
Dec. 28, 2012 | 22562 |
Replaced the EVCB board with one from Ron Anderson. No change in the car's behavior.
Ron replaced 3 transisters on my old EVCB board, but his testing showed it was still leaking current to the reverse relay when the switch was set to neutral or forward. This can be bad as if the forward and reverse relays are both closed at the same time, then there will be a high voltage short through the relays. Ron's new board does not leak this current. |
$238.50 |
Feb 2013 | 22562 | Order 3 batteries from Amazon. | $550 |
Jun. 15, 2013 | 22562 |
Ron Anderson came over and we put the controller he had rebuilt back in the Sparrow. The Sparrow moves under its own power, but only around the block.
The batteries are not in good shape. 3 batteries won't stay above 10V at 100A. Charging them individually. |
